Utilizing data center waste heat: case district Amstel III

To combat climate change, the Dutch government targets to reduce CO2 emissions to zero in the coming decades to 2050. Part of this is natural gas-free living and working. To reach this target, using a heat network is one of the options.

When existing commercial properties want to reduce CO2 emissions, heating and cooling networks can be an interesting option! Why? Commercial properties are often situated in a clustered environment of business parks. Also, property owners like to outsource energy supplies, building management and exploitation to professional service providers. However we need a system change in order to facilitate the use of heating and cooling networks. ‘Open’ heating and cooling networks need to be applied with a limitation between modular energy services on the one hand and grid management on the other hand. This ‘open’ system can be made possible with an economic, technical and organisational framework.

In the research project “RiRa Amstel III ” a method has been developed for transformation areas to get to a shared vision and supported approach to use a 5th generation heating and cooling network in the heat transition. In our final report we share with you the conclusions (in Dutch) of this research project. What will you learn?
